FISA Safety Recommendations

Early in the campaign we lobbied FISA about the buoyancy issue and they responded well. They undertook research and comprehensive consultation. As a result they circulated this document to all National Governing Bodies in January 2006. It includes recommendation for a minimum flotation standard for all boats, similar to that which we proposed.

FISA also changed their international Rules of Racing to include the rule that boats competing in FISA events (Olympics, World Championships etc) should comply with this flotation standard.

FISA only has jurisdiction at international level and can't enforce regulation at national level. However it is clear that FISA expects all NGBs to comply with these minimum guidelines for the safe practice of rowing within their own nations.
