Swamping record

back to listing

Date June 1st 2003
Location English Channel - south of Isle of Wight
Water Temperature 15 degrees
Boat(s) involved Coastal 4+
Boat Construction Burgashell - open under seats
Outcome Crew was able to row boat into calmer water, transfer to accompanying RIB, bailed out and back underway shortly. Note that boat remained upright and stable without crew whilst one person stayed aboard to bail the boat. Sealed watertight compartments below seats would almost certainly have allowed the crew to row through the choppy water without incident. The boat has 3 self-bailers fitted but these were not effective in preventing the boat from flooding.
Description Boat swamped by 2-3 large waves in overfalls south of St Catherines point. Boat remained stable and afloat with water just above gunwales.
