back to listing

Date 1978
Location Thames
Water Temperature
Boat(s) involved 8+
Boat Construction
Outcome They got to the bank, where there was no help available and had to run some 5km to the home of one of them. They were very hypothermic despite their exertions. They were in desperate straits when they reached the house ('working only on autopilot'). Getting indoors they went straight to the airing cupboard & covered themselves in warm laundry.
Description A very good eight full of internationals hit a squall on the Thames in winter and went swiftly under. The cox was heavily swaddled against the cold and apparently came close to drowning. The rest of the crew was in thin kit & very hot when the swamping happened.
